5 IT Habits Every Growing Nigerian Business Needs
Five IT Operations Habits Every Growing Nigerian Business Should Adopt
By the Mailop Technologies team
Most businesses don't fail at technology because they chose the wrong tool. They struggle because the basics of running IT were never put in place. Whether you run a shop, a hotel or a school, these five habits will save you money, downtime and stress as you grow.
1. Give every person their own identity
Shared logins are convenient until someone leaves, or something goes wrong and nobody can say who did what. Give each staff member their own account, protect it with multi-factor authentication, and remove access on the day they exit. Centralized identity, such as Microsoft 365 or Active Directory, makes this far easier than managing accounts app by app.
2. Back up, then test the restore
A backup you have never restored is a hope, not a plan. Follow the simple 3-2-1 rule: three copies of your data, on two different types of storage, with one copy off-site or in the cloud. Then, at least once a quarter, restore a file or a whole system to confirm it actually works.
3. Plan for power and connectivity failures
In Nigeria, outages are a design constraint, not an exception. Put critical equipment such as routers, switches and servers on a UPS, keep a secondary internet link (a different provider, ideally on a different medium), and choose software that keeps working offline or syncs safely once the connection returns.
4. Document as you go
Write down your network layout, your licenses, your vendor contacts and your recurring fixes. Good documentation turns a crisis that depends on one person's memory into a routine task anyone on the team can handle. A shared page that is slightly out of date still beats nothing.
5. Choose SaaS for fit, not hype
Cloud software removes a lot of maintenance burden, but only if it matches how you really work. Before adopting a tool, ask:
- Does it work for your sector's day-to-day workflow, such as point of sale, bookings or student records?
- Can you export your data if you ever leave?
- How does it behave when the connection drops?
- Is support local, responsive and reachable?
Putting it into practice
You don't need to do all five at once. Start with identity and backups, since they protect you from the most damaging problems, then work through the rest over a few months.
